Both pulsed dye laser and intense pulsed light demonstrated efficacy in improving the appearance of stretch marks, according to researchers.

Twenty patients were treated on one side of their bodies with pulsed dye laser (PDL) and on the other with intense pulsed light (IPL) for five sessions, with 4 weeks between each session. Patients’ results were evaluated clinically prior to treatment and at 1 month after the final treatment.

Both treatments yielded significant improvements in overall skin texture and a significant decrease in stretch mark width, according to the researchers.

Additionally, both PDL and IPL were shown to significantly increase collagen expression. However, PDL significantly improved collagen type I expression compared with IPL, according to the researchers.
